In this blog, Bahaa Abdul Hadi introduces ID4Africa, an organization that plays a key role in identity management in Africa.

ID4Africa was established in 2014 as a non-governmental organization with the mission of supporting African countries in their efforts to create secure and accountable identity systems that can be used for good.

ID4Africa is a Movement that encourages the appropriate use of cutting-edge digital identity systems as engines of the continent’s social and economic growth. Its mission is broken down into seven distinct pillars of work (listed below).

To make people visible and enable them to exercise their rights from birth to death, “Identity Right from the Start” advocates for a lifecycle approach to identifying individuals.

Second, stress the importance of a service-oriented self-perception in facilitating all people’s full and equal participation in economic development.

Third, identity practitioners and institutions in a country work together to achieve common goals by implementing capacity-building programs.

Facilitate South-South experience transfer to help other African countries learn from and build upon the successes of the continent’s top performers.

Encourage a healthy commercial identity industry, where technology and solution providers constantly compete on product features, performance, and price, to tackle Africa’s identification concerns.

Assist those invested in the identities of people in Africa to gain access to trustworthy data that can guide their decisions about where to put their money.

Host an annual meeting in Africa that all African countries can send representatives to actively participate in the dialogue on identity issues and set the groundwork for next year’s ID development agenda.

Challenge

Even though economic growth in Africa is quickening, its advantages are not being shared equally. Inclusion is crucial for social development to keep pace with economic expansion and produce lasting benefits. National solid identity systems are needed so all Africans can participate in the continent’s democratic and economic takeoff. And receive government services and benefits to which they are constitutionally entitled.

Community & Knowledge Exchange

ID4Africa is building a network of stakeholders who share a vision for how Africa can achieve greater economic and social progress through digital identity.

The Annual Meeting will initially be the primary venue for sharing information and connecting among participants. A growing number of forums will be made available through the ID4Africa Movement. It is like individuals and groups can get together to share experiences and brainstorm potential solutions. Also, learn more about how they can put digital identification to work for Africa’s economic and social progress.

Activities

Campaigns for the year are organized around the Movement’s fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30 of the year that follows the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

At the start of each cycle, the ID4Africa Community is polled, and scenario analysis is conducted to ensure an accurate picture of Africa’s identification needs and issues. Because of this, the strategy of the Movement and the variety of events that make up the year-long drive is shaped by this consideration.
